![]() PDFelement seems to use other brands to marketing their own product and their quality is poor. PDFpen Expert as subscription without OCR, without form creation capabilities, without export features is a bit too high for a pretty UI. Adobe is too expensive and non-intuitive. The alternative is to lock yourself into yet another subscription. Smile's upgrade cost is pretty reasonable for their work. If you find the app useful, I think it is worthwhile to make sure you are running the latest version. ![]() I've seen great apps or apps with potential come and go because the developers can no longer support the app- very sad thing. It takes resources to create and develop software. Nothing of quality is free and needs maintenance. They also send you an email when they release a major version to let you know. For those who "accidentally" upgrade, there is a notice informing users when it is a paid upgrade. You are not "locked-in" to a subscription, and the app is yours forever. I am looking forward to additional developments of PDFpenPro that can bring the app even closer to the offerings of Acrobat, but better than Acrobat.Īs more and more developers are going subscription, I don't mind the optional $30 upgrade to the next major version. Bugs? All apps have bugs and PDFpenPro seems to have less of it over time since they've been around for awhile, but a responsive developer who really works to address it is much appreciated. I contact support regularly if I come across any issues and they are very responsive. For instance, with PDFpenPro, I can create interactive forms, apply digital signatures, batch OCR, and with the latest version, view the same document in two screens! Someone mentioned it is the swiss-army knife of PDF editors for Mac and I agree 100%. Other apps have better marketing, but PDFpenPro really gets the job done. I am a long-time user of PDFpenPro but have also used Adobe Acrobat and other competing apps. This is definitely the best alternative to Acrobat Pro.

And that is my main gripe with btrfs at present. Run "old" kernels with known bugs or recent ones with unknown ones. However, that's not the problem, but that when you obey and use the bleeding edge kernels, you better be ready to find new bugs and possibly have to compile patched kernels. That's fine, I can understand why developers say so and too why users may not able to follow the recommendation. Note - I find it easier and more convenient to melt half chocolate and shortening now, and after it's been used, heat the remainder that way chocolate stays warm, smooth, and easier to work with. Heat in 15-second bursts, stopping to check and stir after each, until chocolate can be stirred smooth. In a large microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate and shortening (helps chocolate stay much smoother and for a longer period and highly recommend), and heat on high power to melt, about 1 minute. Place discs on prepared baking sheet sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and allow them to firm up for at least 2 hours, or overnight, before dipping them in chocolate. The batter will be warm but cool enough to handle easily if yours is too warm, wait until it cools sufficiently to handle it to shape the discs. I'd also suggest not connecting anything not required to make it boot, including all drives because a bad drive can cause it to hang while booting. You will get the error at POST prompting you to go in to the BIOS (Press F1) but that's normal to see whenever you do this and it defaults. You can do this three or four times in a row, back to back and then see if it will boot at all. If there is an issue with your RAM settings you can force a default boot by pressing and holding the power button until it cuts off on it's own. Juxtaposed to the copperplates of the carceri with their harsh deep engraved lines effecting a resemblance to carved stone and hewn timbers, the copperplates of the grotteschi are marked with the lightest of etching strokes and nowhere more than in the frothy effects of La Tavola Monumentale. The work’s feathery curving lines obviously owe a debt to Piranesi’s exposure to Tiepolo, and especially the older Venetian’s 1743 capricci. ![]() Or, perhaps more accurately, we could argue that it is only the title of the plate that gives the “tavola” its centrality within a veritable cascade of images. And yet it would be just as possible to believe we are looking at stone blocks of varying proximities, against each of which rests a picture frame. The block is flanked to its left, at a recession, by another, similar, stone block. 1749) from the grotteschi evokes a kind of trompe l’oeil, indicating the word for the engraving plate itself, la tavola, as well as what might be considered to be the monumental central image it presents - the tabula rasa facade of a stone block framed by an egg-and-dart border on which rest, or are hung, several cameos of figures in ancient drapery. The very title of La Tavola Monumentale (ca. 4 In the course of the development of his work, he displays a vertigo-inducing facility for moving between the page and the architectural space. In his preface to his four-volume work of 1756, Le Antichità Romane ( Roman Antiquities), Piranesi explains that he plans to re-create Roman space on paper: “When I saw the remains of the ancient buildings of Rome lying as they do in cultivated fields or gardens and wasting away under the ravages of time, or being destroyed by greedy owners who sell them as materials for modern building, I determined to preserve them forever by means of engraving”. His "speaking" ruins - glimpses and vistas alike, broken open and inside out, vanishing and revealing at once - inspire his life-long pursuit of the reality of the past, his methods shaped by his over-arching commitments to speculation and artistic freedom. 3 These early works by Piranesi already indicate the promise of what we might call a "paper architecture": an evolving practice that eventually will bring together exacting details of first-hand observation and the farthest reaches of the draughtsman's imagination. In a period of less than a decade, he went on to publish his fantastic architectural images of the Prima parte, worked out plans for two drawing series, the grotteschi (grottos or grotesques) and the carceri d’invenzione (imaginary prisons), and began the production of his first set of Vedute di Roma. When, out of funds, he returned to Venice, he frequented the studios of Tiepolo and the engraver Giuseppe Wagner and eventually, in 1747, returned to Rome as Wagner’s agent. With his move to Rome in 1740 as a draftsman in the retinue of the Venetian Ambassador Francesco Venier, Piranesi could be found working in the bottega of Giuseppe Vasi by 1742, continuing to develop his skills as a printmaker, and exploring the archaeological sites at Herculaneum in 1743. 2 His brother Angelo, a Carthusian monk, provided him with lessons in Greek and Latin and a knowledge of ancient history, studies that fired him with zeal for classical antecedents. Piranesi’s fascination with stone and vaults, particularly on a “magnificent” scale, evolved from his family’s long interest in the origins of architecture in general and Roman monuments in particular. 1īorn in 1720 in Mogliano Veneto, near Mestre, Piranesi was the son of a stone mason and throughout his life described himself as a “Venetian architect”. Their most well-known student, the eighteenth-century Venetian and Roman engraver-architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi, called them, in the dedication to his 1743 Prima parte di architetture, e prospettive, “queste parlanti ruine”: “these speaking ruins”. There are lots of fascinating interpretations of the survival genre in this list, but The Long Dark sticks to the fundamentals and works magic with them. You’ve got to work out your diet, how far you can travel on a full stomach, exactly how much time you’ll have before it gets dark and the temperature plummets, and then there are the contingency plans for things like blizzards - you’re not popping out for a quick drink. You have to worry about your basic human needs and very little else, but that’s actually a pretty big job. Getting ready to leave the shelter feels like planning a wilderness expedition. You’ve got to find shelter, and then venture out to find supplies, all while trying to keep your calorie intake up and your body warm. Its episodic story mode, Wintermute, serves as a gentle introduction to its harsh, yet beautiful world, but it's the game's survival mode that's the true, open-ended test of your mettle, dropping you into a freezing world and then leaving you to find your own way. The Long Dark’s vast, snow-blanketed wilderness is a harsh and uncompromising place. The last I checked David Tennant is in it? The game's also home to an absolute plethora of updates and expansions, which means you shouldn't be starved of things to do. Expect lots of collecting fibers and fur to craft boots, maybe a spear to fend off enemy players or protect your allies. And if you're a fan of the traditional first-person survival sim, then you'll find plenty to like here too.
